Alex Harris was born in Edinburgh and began his career with the Civil Service Strollers, alongside future Hibernian teammate Danny Handling before joining Hibernian's Youth Academy. He made his first-team debut in a 3-0 victory over Dundee in 2012 after coming on as an 88th-minute substitute for Paul Cairney.
However, he missed most of the first half of the 2013/14 season due to an ankle injury and after returning to the Hibernian first team in January 2014, he signed a new contract, tying him to the club until June 2017. Alex scored his first goal for the club in the 2012/13 Scottish Cup semi-final against Falkirk with Hibs coming back from 3–0 down at half-time to win 4–3.

It was agreed that Alex would move to Dundee on loan in January 2015 in exchange for Martin Boyle and he scored his first goal for Dundee only a week later, with a deflected shot in the third minute of a 4–1 home win against Motherwell. He would also spend time on loan with Queen of the South before returning to the Hibernian side for the 2016/17 season, but was again affected by injury.
Alex made 60 appearances for Hibs across all competitions scoring twice before leaving the club during the 2017 close season at the end of his contract. He went onto join Falkirk where he stayed for a season before moving south to York City. He signed for Edinburgh City in 2019.
Alex is the great, great-nephew of former Hibernian, Everton and Scotland player Jimmy Dunn.
