Unveiling of the James Main Memorial Plaque
Football fans of a certain age are aware of the death of the Celtic goalkeeper, John Thomson, who sustained fatal injuries in a clash with Sam English during a game against Rangers at Ibrox in September 1931, succumbing to his injuries later the same night. 2009 saw the 100th anniversary of a lesser know incident - the death of Hibernian international defender James Main who died at the age of 23 as the result of a similar freak on-field accident. On Christmas Day 1909, during a game between Partick Thistle and Hibernian at Firhill, Main was injured in an accidental clash with an opponent, his resulting injuries ultimately proving fatal.
On Saturday, the 18th of September, the Trust unveiled a plaque honouring the memory of the player in the presence of Main's great-nephew David Gibb, his wife Margaret and son Kenneth.
The plaque is located in the lower concourse of the Famous Five Stand.
