1888 Edinburgh Association Shield Runners Up Medal

The Trust recently acquired an East of Scotland runners up medal presented to Hibernian goalkeeper Felix Docherty after the surprise 1-0  defeat by West Calder side Mossend Swifts in the 1887-88 final at Tynecastle.

The defeat was Hibernian's first in the competition since 1879, only a walk over awarded to Edinburgh University after Hibs had been unable to field a team in the 1882-83 final spoiling a record of 8 consecutive victories in the competition. Sweet revenge for the defeat was gained only a few weeks later when Hibs defeated Swifts 1-0 in the Roseberry Cup, again at Tynecastle.

The long serving goalkeeper Docherty was a registered Hibs player between the years 1879-1889, and although he did not appear to always be the regular first choice during this period, he did none the less take part in a number of important games.  After the club was reformed in time for the 1893-94 season, Docherty served Hibernian as a valued member of the committee.
